What is a Casing Head?
A Casing Head is a vital, heavy-duty component that serves as the foundation for the entire wellhead system in oil and gas drilling. It is typically installed and secured on top of the initial string of casing (the surface casing). It is more than just a connector; it’s the anchor point for all subsequent pressure control and support equipment.
Key Components and Connections of Casing Head
The complete casing head assembly includes the casing head shell, a casing spool, a casing hanger, and a jacking screw assembly.
Casing Hanger: A casing hanger is installed within the housing to suspend the casing strings, with different specifications available to suit various casing procedures and wellhead requirements.
Top Connections: The upper part of the body features standard industry flanges, such as API 6B or API 6BX flanges, to provide transitional connections for devices like tubing heads and Christmas trees.
Bottom Connections: The lower connection to the outer surface casing is highly customizable, with options including threaded connections (like BTC, LCSG, CSG, WST), plug-welded sleeve connections, or slip connections.
Side Ports: The side ports feature pipeline thread type or studs design, and a welded support chassis can also be provided.
Functions of Casing Head
Structural Support: It is designed to support the immense weight (gravity) of both the technical casing and the inner production (oil layer) casing strings.
Sealing: It seals the annular spaces (the gaps) between all layers of pipe.
Well Control Interface: The space around the casing head’s body is where the blowout preventer (BOP) is installed.
Fluid Management: Its side ports allow for crucial operations such as cement replenishment, well sinking monitoring, and balancing fluid injection.
