A cementing plug is important because it ensures a successful cementing operation by separating fluids and providing a reliable way to monitor the process.
Key functions:
Fluid Separation: The primary function is to act as a physical barrier. The bottom cement plug is pumped ahead of the cement slurry to prevent it from mixing with the drilling fluid. The top cement plug is then pumped after the cement, separating it from the displacement fluid (like water or drilling mud). This ensures the cement remains uncontaminated and maintains its designed properties.
Wiping Action: Both cementing plugs have a wiping function. As they travel down the casing, their rubber fins or wipers scrape the inner walls, removing any residual mud or debris. This helps ensure a clean surface for the cement to bond with.
Pressure Indication: The top cementing plug provides a crucial signal at the surface. When it lands on the bottom cementing plug (or the float collar), it causes a sudden increase in pump pressure. This pressure spike, known as a pressure bump, confirms that the cement has been fully displaced and is in its correct position in the annulus (the space between the casing and the wellbore).
